Thanks, Kathy. Yes, SEO works for those who have the money to pay for it. Unfortunately, there are many mom and pop businesses who cannot afford for us to optimize their site against the big guys. That's what I mean by saying that seo doesn't work anymore - it is not organic anymore, since you have to spend hours and money making your site competitive.

You and I can help those who have money to burn, but it leaves the little guy out - the ones who may not have a staff to learn seo and implement even the basics.

I hope to have time to educate visitors to this site about seo, so they can save some money, if they have time to implement it.

Hi Lynn, I enjoyed your article and stand beside you.

While Google's intent is good, it's methodology is not always perfect. However, just to show you there is hope for the little guy, I did SEO on a local attorney's website about 4 years ago. We went up against a big conglomerate which I won't name here, but suffice it to say it is a very large directory that provides website and SEO services for attorneys. Their members are consistently found on the first page of Google. When I saw what they had at their disposal to get those high rankings for their clients such as hundreds of pages they provide each client and that many inbound links, I wondered if we'd really be able to help my client, but we did.

I'm happy to report that within 6 months they shot up to #1 spot in Google for all the keywords we optimized their site for and remain there to this day - above all those other attorney sites associated with the big guns - about 4 or 5 years later. We did it with no trickery and very little investment. We simply employed SEO best practices on site and off is all. So there is hope.

Nevertheless, there are those examples that don't have quite as happy an outcome, and I get as frustrated as you, as does Jill Whalen, one of my favorite SEOs. I thought you'd enjoy this article of hers: http://www.highrankings.com/dear-google-290

Thanks. I hope it helps people. I see my clients go through so much stress and, though I love getting the business, I also feel for them and hope they can prevent problems in the future.
